#Summerz0ver FJH 3.0 Commence

Today is Tuesday August 28th, 2012. The day before the classes start and the official end of summer session 2.5. Let's find out what everyone spent their summer doing!
Gabe Mathews, Formally Noodleboy, THE FROST QUEEN: Gabe spent his summer ruling over Narnia. Unfortunately a pesky cat named Azlan thought Gabe's idea of an endless winter of pointless academia to be a bit pedantic, so he banished Gabe to Los Angeles. I hope his pale skin can cope with 13 hours of daily sunshine!

Ben Tuthill: Ben spent his summer partying with Snoop Aslan. Hopefully this doesn't cause any tension between him and the Frost Queen!

Zoé Butler: Zoé spent her summer hanging out with her grandparents and sharecropping. What a bum!

Noah Donnell Kilmer: Noah loitered in Inglewood where he potentially might have been near Snoop Aslan's past acquaintances. It hasn't occurred to me until right now how much of our lives revolved around the Snoop Lion! It will be interesting to see if these past rivalries emerge to divide the house.
Clarissa Bosomething: Clarissa's car broke down and her step dad woke up from his hibernation and kicked Landon out of our house. Good riddance Landon!
Julia Carrizosa: To quote her Mother, "Ching chong lee long hua y tsing."

Leah Sussman: Leah had a life changing experience in Frankfurt where she took a  tour of the world famous Alibaba sausage factory. She brought us back a plethora of grounds meats and is excited to begin preparing her own sausages!

Dan: what did I do? I wrote a delightful little story about a group of children and their feline friend. I guess if I had to say I would classify it as fantasy/children's literature, but I don't want to give too much away.

I'm not sure who this goofy guy is, but he sure loves fruit. I'd write more, but my internet is so slow!

Sugar: A Hidden Demon

The LA County Health Department launched a campaign to educate people about the health problems (pdf) caused by sugary drinks.  "You wouldn't eat 22 packs of sugar.  Why are you drinking them?"

With 38% of Los Angeles County drinking one or more sodas a day, education around this issue has never been so necessary.  The majority of the soda drinkers are young, with 70% of 18 -24 year olds having at least one soda a day.

In addition to an educational campaign, the county has worked to increase physical activity throughout the region by setting up a grant program, Renew Environments for Nutrition, Exercise, and Wellness (RENEW LA) to provide funding to ten organizations giving them, "approximately $240,000 to develop and implement initiatives that will increase physical activity and access to healthy foods through policy, systems, and environmental change."
